Lecture Game of Thrones (ft. MSVL Floris V)

Knights, queens, castles and dragons – the fantasy world of Game of Thrones was clearly inspired by the Middle Ages. G. R. R. Martin, the producers of the TV show, as well as fans of the books and show, have all claimed that Westeros represents an authentic medieval world. In this lecture, we will explore how medieval the world of Game of Thrones really is. As we shall see, aside from incorporating actual medieval culture, G. R. R. Martin also responds to other adaptations of the Middle Ages, including the works of J. R. R. Tolkien and the so-called ‘Disneyland Middle Ages’. In doing so, he creates a neomedievalist world that quite clearly reflects modern-day concerns.
In the emotional build-up period towards the release date of the last season of Game of Thrones, Dr. M.H . Porck will give a lecture on all of this titled: “Not Today”: The World of Game of Thrones, the Middle Ages and Medievalism”.
> when: Thursday, April 11th, 17:00
> where: Lipsius 2.28
> drinks afterwards in Café de Keyzer!
